Setting up a new Windows PC for KIC Scanners

In the instance where a new windows PC replacement is needed for a KIC scanner, refer to this guide on Driver installation, Windows configurations, and other quality-of-life settings needed to correctly set up a new PC.

Prerequisites

  1. Image the computer with a stock KACE image- We will be using a software package to install the scanner-specific tools.

  2.   Check and see if the touchscreen on the physical scanner is functional. Fortunately, the touchscreens we use are plug-and-play so plugging it in and touching it to see if it works will suffice. If we need to install the software without the use of Bomgar, make sure to bring a mouse and keyboard with you

  3. Make sure to set the pc to never sleep or shut down. This is a public terminal so it can stay on forever.

How to enable Auto-Login

  1. Note: Make sure that you are performing the next steps on libacct.

  2. On libacct, make a local admin account named “KIC”. This will be the account that will allow users to use the KIC software. This will also be the account that auto-logs into the machine the password is in LastPass

  3. To enable auto-login, refer to this page from Microsoft:https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/user-profiles-and-logon/turn-on-automatic-logon

  4. Make sure to enable this on the local account “KIC” and not libacct. You can check if the auto-login works by restarting the computer and letting it log in to KIC. Afterward, sign out of the account and continue with the driver installation.

Where to find the Software Package

  1. The KIC software package can be found in norfile.net.ou.edu\UL-DEPTS\Software\Hardware; Printers, Scanners, Cameras, etc\KIC Installation

  2. These files are the Windows C++ driver, the scanner driver for Windows (FB6280E), the scanner image OCR, and the KIC installation (7.0.14.3).

  3. Note: Adobe Reader DC is needed for the OCR, but that is easy to get from the internet. After installing OCR make sure to install that as well to get it to properly function.

  4. DO THESE IN ORDER DO NOT START WITH THE SETUP FIRST

C++ install

  1. Choose the C++ Redist 2015-2019 x64 version to install.

  2. C++ installation does not take very long to install. Go through the prompts and it will go smoothly. Sometimes the computer will already have this installed. If so move on to the scanner driver.

Scanner FB6280E Driver install ( From here on you will need to double check these with a scanner after install)

  1. Installing FB6280E Driver does not take long either.

  2. Click Setup.exe

    1. click setup.exe

    2. choose English

  3. click next

  4. Select the TWAIN driver and the WIA driver and install

  5. Close out after finishing and continue to OCR installation

IA OCR install

  1. Click setup.exe

  2. Click next

  3. It should finish very quickly. Afterward close out and open the windows button and find “OCR Engine Workbench” in the start menu

  4. Click “Register OCR Engine” and then “Test OCR Engine” in that order

  5. After these are done, close the window and move on to configuring the scanner

Scanner Setup you will need to be plugged into the scanner

  1. Find “Avision FB6280E Scanner” folder and click on the “Avision Capture Tool” program in the drop-down menu

  2. Click Ok

  3. Make sure Adobe Reader DC is installed! This can be found easily on the internet. The scanner and this capture tool do not work properly without it installed.

  4. Click Setup

  5. Turn off “power off”. This will enable the scanner to stay on unless manually powered down.

  6. You can test out the scanner by pressing “Scan” but we can do that here in a second

  7. Close out and continue to KIC installation

KIC Setup

  1. Click KicSetup 7.0.14.3

  2. Click Next

  3. Install KIC for everyone

  4. After this is finished, you should be able to see KIC and KIC setup on the desktop.

  5. Click Kic Setup

  6. There are a lot of options here, but let’s check out “Scanner”

  7. Make sure to have it set to “iVina FB6280E”

  8. Click “Download License File”. It will look like it freezes up but it will show a confirmation message after it is done

  9. Click Check License File

  10. Afterwards close out and click “KIC”

  11. The first setup should take a little longer since it is downloading the config files from the KIC server

  12. If you see this screen, we are done! Congratulations! This screen should block out the rest of the PC for public use, so people won’t access the rest of the computer files. If you performed a manual installation make sure to unplug the mouse and keyboard after you are done.

How to set up automatic reboot/restart

  1. open task scheduler

  2. click task scheduler library

  3. click create task

  4. name it automatic reboot or auto reboot

  5. set it for sometime when the library is closed (some are set to 3AM others are set to 5 AM)

  6. have it run daily or ever 1 day starting on the day you’re creating it

  7. when it asks about having it prove it’s done just hit open a program or script (the deprecated ways won’t work I tried)

  8. click “on this PC” or whatever

  9. open program files (x86)

  10. open KIC’s folder

  11. open KIC application

  12. click next and I think you’re done.

  13. follow https://www.windowscentral.com/how-create-automated-task-using-task-scheduler-windows-10 if you need visuals or have questions.

Other Things

  1. We do have a Run Now script in KACE for Adobe Creative Cloud w/ Adobe reader only, but I found it easier to install Acrobat Reader through the internet instead.

  2. Make sure that you add bomgar.

  3. Make sure you get a full timer to move the Scanner to AD group Resources-Lib\Workstations-Limbo\KIC

  4. Need to work with the security operations team to ensure that the KIC.exe has been excluded on the workstation.
